A clear, documented account makes an overdue business balance easier to assess and helps avoid delays at the start of a recovery enquiry.
STEP 1
Record the creditor and debtor legal names, trading details, addresses, invoice references, original value, credits, payments and the current balance.
STEP 2
Gather contracts, orders, invoices, delivery or completion evidence, account statements and the correspondence showing what has been requested and disputed.
STEP 3
List the supply date, invoice date, due date, reminders, debtor responses, promises to pay and any partial payments in date order.
STEP 4
Identify the exact reason given for non-payment and keep the evidence that supports your response. A known dispute should be disclosed at the start.
STEP 5
The documents, debtor location, age of the balance and previous communication all affect whether a matter is suitable for recovery support or requires specialist advice.
This guide is general practical information, not legal advice. Requirements and available options depend on the contract, facts and jurisdiction.
